Why This Book Exists

Since 2010, American school districts have spent over $100 billion on educational technology. Most of it has not worked. Not because the tools were bad, but because the leadership conditions for adoption were never built.

The Connected District is Dr. Aubrey Escobar's answer to that crisis. Drawing on over 25 years in classrooms, district administration, and EdTech leadership, she maps the nine domains that separate districts where technology transforms learning from those where it collects dust.

This is not a book about apps. It is a book about leadership — and the human systems that make or break every initiative you will ever launch.

Inside the Book

Nine Chapters. Nine Domains.
One Connected District.

Chapter 01

The $100 Billion Graveyard

Why K-12 technology initiatives fail at staggering rates — and what the pattern of failure reveals about leadership, not technology.

Chapter 02

The Myth of the Silver Bullet

How districts fall into the product-first trap, and why the next platform will not solve what the last one could not.

Chapter 03

What Connection Actually Means

A new framework for understanding connectivity as a leadership discipline — across people, data, systems, and community.

Chapter 04

The Equity Imperative

Technology decisions are equity decisions. This chapter unpacks how procurement, implementation, and access intersect with justice.

Data as a Leadership Language

Moving beyond dashboards to a culture where data informs every layer of decision-making — from the classroom to the boardroom.

Chapter 06

The Vendor Relationship Reimagined

How to shift from transactional purchasing to strategic partnership — and what districts should demand from their EdTech vendors.

Chapter 07

Building the Connected Team

The internal structures, roles, and professional learning cultures that make technology adoption sustainable.

Chapter 08

Community as Infrastructure

Why family and community engagement is not a soft add-on but a core component of any technology strategy that lasts.

Chapter 09

The Connected District in Practice

Case studies, field tools, and a practical roadmap for district leaders ready to move from diagnosis to transformation.

Book to Practice

The ELLI Program Is the Book in Action

Every module in the ELLI Program maps directly to the nine domains of The Connected District. The book gives your leadership team the research and the why. The ELLI Program gives them the structured professional learning to act on it.

Districts that pair the book with the ELLI sequence report faster alignment, deeper buy-in, and more durable change than either resource alone.
